• w/ DJ Keili (WFMU) +

Jan 14th, 2012 BIG SKY WORKS presents an evening of all original music with three of the hottest teen rock bands in the country along with special guest DJ KEILI from Beastin’ the Airwaves on WFMU Radio and mind bending visuals from BAMIAM.TV

THE INDECENT make music that is aggressive, subtle, poetic, profane, and quite often all these things at once. Influenced by Patti Smith, the Gits, the Velvet Underground, Barrett’s Floyd, and many Seattle-type things, the Indecent are Emily Brout (vocals), Madeline Brout (bass), Bo Brout (guitar), all from New York City, and Windsor, Ontario’s Nicholas Burrows on drums. The group self-released their first album, Her Screwed Up Head, in the fall of 2010, and will release their major label debut on Warner Bros Records this coming spring, produced by Rob Cavallo.

BIG NILS is a Western Mass. Freewheelin’ punk band that enjoys getting band burgers (and each other). They are named after a very tall ex punk rocker named Nils who has a rock n’ roll tattoo and has been arrested for stealing and setting buildings on fire. They are currently working on putting out “Siblings” on cassette tape and hopefully, in the future on vinyl. Some fun band activities include making underwear, taking band trips to play shows in Sen’s Cadillac and making noise in Coco’s basement.

TOY SUGAR is NYC’s all girl teen band-a little sweet, a little rebellious and a whole lotta’ talented! They are fans of sweeping guitars, crooning vocals, and pounding drums. Their unique sound plays with old school rock n’ roll, touches of punk and indie rock. They have played many wonderful venues in NYC and especially love Big Sky Works, which is a second home to these rockers!

DJ KEILI- WFMU darling and host of Beastin’ The Airwaves! with Keili since 2008, DJ Keili has been spinning on the air and in the club since the age of 15. She’s got her finger on the pulse of the All Ages Indie Music movement, bringing it to events at the finest venues and smallest dives in New York City and the world.

B.A MIALE aka BAMiAM.TV is a not only an award winning music video director, but a rare breed of video artist who mashes up her playfully psychedelic visuals in real time on a keytar.

Garage Performance and Film this Sunday

Sunday. January 8th. doors @ 8 pm
29 Wythe Ave. @ 14th St. $10 donation

Featuring: Jennifer Monson & Jennifer Miller, Karen Bellone & Lisa Rinzler, Johanna S. Meyers & Alexandra Hartmann, Stephanie Artz & Mark Howell, Sara Brown & NYC, Maja Rajenovich & Julia Sterling, and Lone Wolf & Cub.

Jennifer Miller & Jennifer Monson have a sporadic, on-going dance collaboration. In this performance they will continue their investigation of improvised unison with reference to Merce Cunningham, Anna Halprin & Chris Cochrane. Miller is founder & director of Circus Amok, and professor at Pratt Institute. Monson is founder & artistic director of iLAND (interdisciplinary Laboratory of Art Nature and Dance), and professor at University of Illinois.

Death By Unnatural Causes (1992), short film by Karen Bellone & Lisa Rinzler. This work is a visceral homage to those living and passing under the shadow of AIDS in a world run amok.

Alexandra Hartmann & Johanna S. Meyers will perform stunts never seen by anyone. Perform things never ever done…in a reunion performance of long time collaborators. Dance With My Wall, Please! is a series of love duets and solos with Tanya Gagne’s wall.

Dancer Stephanie Artz & guitarist Mark Howell collaborate on interstellar planes, notes, movements, gestures, waves of sound/space exploring alternative realities through parallel universes of dance and music. She is live; he is molecular.

Sara Brown & New York is a West Coast Riot Grrl living and loving in NYC, a freelance photographer who walked straight off the bus into the circus via Tanya’s Trapeze Loft. Tonight, she’ll share with us some of her great partner shots.

Maja Rajenovich (Brooklyn) & Julia Sterling (San Francisco) will attempt the transcontinental communication between two. This brief exposition: Air Of Breathing Under A Blanket gets warm in a confined virtual reality of contrived privacy. Another reunion performance made possible by the Jetsons.

Lone Wolf & Cub is Ryan Sawyer on drums & Suzanne Rogaleski on trapeze. They light up the night sky through their passionate conversation, responding to one another in time and space, in wondrous, daring optimism.

Short Films from the early 70s by DENNIS OPPENHEIM. Thanks to the artist’s trust and the Slought Foundation, BSW presents “COMPRESSION FERN” in a selection of studio films which reflect Oppenheim’s initiatives into body and land art forms, where formal concerns of sculpture and material shifted onto the person and the interaction, performing art.

JULIE ATLAS MUZ heralds from Detroit who now has an apartment in NYC. She might possibly live at JFK or any international airport around the world. She is a New Yorker and can’t wait to make art with her good friend Tanya. What kind of art? Who knows? But it won’t be boring although she writes this from bored-o (Bordeaux, FR)

Saturday, November 26 at BSW:

Man Forever is a side-project of Kid Millions, who plays drums in Oneida. Never are two performances the same. And nay, barely ever will you see the same ensemble embodied as Man Forever. It is music prepared specially for each event. There will be surprise collaborators.

Here is an example:

Guardian Alien is one of the most exciting bands in New York right now. They play improvised music in the key of B-flat. Audiences are consistently stunned. Spontaneous lyrics over amazing, relentless drumming and fully sonic soloing and riffing. You have to see it to know. They will be joined by for some live video jamming on the magical visual keytar.

Here’s a video of Guardian Alien playing in a radio station:

A magic whistle is the underwater inner-space expedition of multi-instrumentalist and home studio acrobat Andy Magicwhistle. Taking a sizely departure from his most well-known collaboration – the prog-cartoon-freakout duo Neon Hunk (Load Records) – A Magic Whistle travels freely through musical ages and spaces, times, and places.
In it we hear the echoes of eastern folk music, 60’s Moog records, and the innocent spirit of baroque beauty. The holy alloy for this space-submarine is an underlying signature that is living, growing, personal, entirely sincere, and unmistakably original.

This performance will involve Andy preforming live music along with video that he created. Here is one of his older music videos, a simple one:

I saw Many Mansions one time. There’s a lot of people in the band. They played a psychedelic dancy-trancy jam for 45 minutes that had me mesmerized. They grabbed the moment and held on to it for everybody in the room to soak in for a while. This is their return-from-tour show.

Video of a Many Mansions set in a basement in Northampton, Massachusetts.
Tune in around minute 9 for a nice moment:

Video screenings by and Sara Shapouri.
