RISK AGITATOR ~ Nov. 9-12th

Do you have issues with circus? No one to talk to? Nothing to say with your tricks? No home for your weird ideas?

Come to “Group Therapy”–a workshopping session by Risk Agitator for Circus Experimentation.
Open to U.S. circus artists who are members of Risk Agitator: For detailed information, to join, and to apply, please visit

*APPLICANTS TO THIS SESSION SHOULD APPLY WITH A WORK THAT WILL BE PRESENTED (5-20 minutes,) which typifies the issue with which they have been struggling.*

5-10 circus artists will bring their issues to Big Sky Works in Brooklyn, NY. Participants should be currently working with concepts that confront obstacles particular to circus performance. Perhaps it is the idea of letting go of tricks, or playing with what constitutes performance space, or even audience expectation.

Whatever the problem, the group will attempt to solve it over 2 days (Nov. 9-10) of presentation and workshopping.

The following two days (Nov. 11-12) will be spent “working out” our issues and presenting them again to a public audience. Presentation to as public audience on Nov. 12th.

*APPLICANTS TO THIS SESSION SHOULD APPLY WITH A WORK THAT WILL BE PRESENTED (5-20 minutes,) which typifies the issue with which they have been struggling.*

Big Sky Works differs from many other circus training spaces in that Tanya Gagné has spent the past twenty+ years crafting an eclectic community of traditional and experimental performers from any number of artistic disciplines. The DIY attitude of this community is what gives this space the continuous feeling of openness and acceptance that is necessary when the chances of failing are great.

As Risk Agitator is an emerging network, we cannot offer stipends or places to stay, and therefore only artists who live in, or have places to crash in NYC should apply!

Hi Everyone ~ Hope this finds you well. We are re-visiting our campaign so that we can try and keep our doors open until at least the end of the year. The exciting news is that if we are able to exceed our goal, there is an opportunity to now extend our lease until May of 2018. In addition to fundraising, we are looking for community partners to join forces and explore creative ways to keep the space alive and kicking.

We have 4 amazing shows happening this season at Big Sky Works:
DARK IS THE NIGHT (Aerial Cabaret) on Fri. Oct. 27th
Ken’s SATANIC CIRCUS (a bacchanal of music and circus acts featuring The Dangles, Growler + Ondyne’s Demise)
SHEROS Volume 3 Sat. Nov. 18th
Holiday Circus Spectacular Dec. 9th
Please come out and support CIRCUS ARTS + LIVE entertainment!

////////THE BASICS:

> Artist Interactive at the Space Station: Pop up gallery + live art experience with Cara Lee Sparry — All night!

The Archway Under the Manhattan Bridge is a public plaza in DUMBO, Brooklyn. It’s on Water St between Anchorage Place and Adams St.

The multidisciplinary community arts and performance space Big Sky Works brings its interactive circus show and workshop, STARSHIP HOOPERS, to DUMBO for a one night only performance. Members of the Heavenly Bodiesthe Big Sky Works’ Hoop Troopcreate a planetarium and build a solar system with the audience using hula hoops and spinning carpets, together with visuals by B.A. Miale. Big Sky Works was founded by Tanya Gagne, whose work has been produced at the Sydney Opera House, the Roundhouse in London, P.S. 122 in New York, The Mayan Festival in LA, and festivals throughout Argentina, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Europe.

Cara Lee Sparry came to New York City to study industrial design at the Pratt Institute in 1988, and she moved to DUMBO in 1992. An installation artist who also works in graphic design, she has previously designed exhibits for the United Nations and the Barney’s Christmas windows, as well as numerous other clients. Cara Lee is the co-founder, owner and designer of Superfine, which opened in 2001, and she designed The Lighthouse beneath the Archway, which opened in 2013.

The Space Station, by This Friday or Next Friday, premieres at this year’s Live at the Archway. Tfnf is likely the tiniest, most inconsequential art gallery in DUMBO, Brooklyn, probably in NYC, and maybe on the face of the earth. It was founded by Nathan Sinai Rayman, and he runs it with Zach Seeger, his Director of Programs.

Live at the Archway showcases the best of DUMBO and Brooklyn talent, presenting a broad range of music and performance genres. This season brings sizzling salsa, Colombian cumbia, swing dancing, world roots music, sultry R&B, an Italian modern dance troupe, puppetry, funk, DJs and more. With beer, wine and bites from The Lighthouse and epic scenery below the Manhattan Bridge, it’s the best place to be every Thursday night.

Concerts & events take place on Thursdayevenings at 6:00 p.m. It’s always all ages and always rain or shine.

Live at the Archway is presented by The DUMBO Improvement District and The Lighthouse. It is co-curated by Clara Inés Schuhmacher, of the BID, and Tanya Rynd of Superfine.

Special thanks to our season sponsor, GreenDesk, DUMBO’s native coworking space.

WORKSHOPS w/ guest artist LAURA STOKES~ Mar.25-30th

LAURA STOKES is a zealous movement researcher, educator and performer. Always fascinated by the notion of embodied experience, she has spent the better part of her life studying and developing a wide range of movement disciplines from gymnastics to esoteric presencing practices. Oregon born, New Mexico tethered, and Berlin based, she is an avid contact improviser, ecstatic aerialist and bizarrely present performer. Laura works with circus virtuosity, somatic awareness and the most basic emotion to create work that examines how we inhabit the physical space of our lives through our bodies. She is the co-founder and director of The Ricochet Project with her partner Cohdi Harrell. Together as Ricochet, they have created a unique brand of circus-theatre that has drawn international attention and praise for their experimentation and innovation and been hailed as vital to the growth of contemporary circus in America.
Flexibility and Choreography:
Using the physical body as a template for exploring performative range, we will look at diversifying typical contortion positions and imbuing them with specificity and meaning. We will investigate flexibility as an avenue for occupying our furthest physiological reaches, ultimately leading to broadening not only the range of body but also of mind and art maker, redefining the flexible body as a potent expressive vehicle rather than mere spectacle. In this workshop we will focus on holistic stretching practices, choreographic phrasing and improvisational tools for developing meaningful individual material.
Participants need not be wildly flexible, but must be interested in working with flexibility, physical and otherwise.

PLease e-mail : tbirdgagne@yahoo.com to book into a workshop or private with Laura at BIG SKY
